The perennial forms a small round mound that looks like a mat. The grey-white leaves span up to five inches in length. The flowers of the Helene von Stein reach up to 18 inches and can be identified by their purple-pink flowers that are a half an inch in width.

This perennial grows best in the spring. It thrives when planted in highly-ventilated sunny areas. Humidity can negatively impact its foliage.
